Welcome to the month of January, Happy 2020!!   

First and foremost, we would like to thank all our families and friends that brought in food, gifts, cards or volunteered their time for the special holiday parties. Thank you from all of us and we appreciate everything you do.

 

We would like to welcome all our new families that will be starting with us this month. Please know that my door is always open for any questions, suggestions or concerns.

 

This month we will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1, for New Years. We are also closed on Monday, January 20 for Martin Luther King Day.

 

Child Outreach will be here on Thursday, Jan. 23rd.  They will be screening children that are 3 years old and older and live in the Warwick and East Greenwich districts. Permission slips have gone out, please come see me if you have not received one and would like your child to be screened.

 

On Thursday, Jan 30th, Ms. Frost is coming and putting on a show for the children in toddlers up to Kindergarten.  Permission slips were just sent home, please look for them.

 

Celebrating a birthday this month is Ms. Kaitlyn in our Kindergarten classroom on 1/29 and Ms. Jacqueline in Infants also on 1/29! Happy birthday to you both.

Infants:

 

Teachers: Ms. Brittany, Ms. Stefanie, Ms. Adrienne, Ms. Abriel and Ms. Jacqueline.

 

This month we will be working on development of small and large motor skills by learning to control body muscles and learning to pick up things and to hold them.  We will also encourage the beginning of reason, such as begging to realize that objects not seen still exist.  We develop object permanence by playing simple games such as peek-a-boo or slightly hiding objects under a blanket.

 

Family Engagement Activity:  Songs, musical games, movement are neurological exercise that helps children learn motor skills and new speech patterns.  I encourage parents to sing or dance to familiar songs such as “If you’re happy and you know it”, or “itsy bitsy spider”, which we do both in class.

 

Happy 1st Birthday to Leo on 1/9, Madison on 1/11 and Giani on 1/29!!!

 

 

Crawlers:

 

Teachers: Ms. Angela, Ms. Stephanie, Ms. Felicia and Ms. Justine.

 

This month we will be concentrating on encouraging children to engage in structured and unstructured physical activities.  We will also encourage engaging in positive relationships and interactions with other children.

 

Classroom Special Events:  Welcoming our new children to the class: GianCarlos, Leo, Madison, Levi and Arya!

 

Family Engagement Activity:  What is in a name?  Where did your child’s name come from? We would love to know.

Toddlers:

 

Teachers: Ms. Tara, Ms. Maria, and Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Teyana.

 

This month we will be focusing on cognitive development- attention and inhibitory control.  We will be practicing this by reading a series of short familiar stories.  In literacy we will be working on alphabet knowledge.  We will be practicing this by reading words out loud and having the children find the object in the pictures.

 

Family Engagement Activity:  Read stories to your child and have them point out in the pictures what the people in the story are doing.

Older Toddlers/Young 3s:

 

Teachers: Ms. Gina, Ms. Janessa and Ms. Ana.

 

This month we will be working on social and emotional development. We will work on developing relationships with familiar adults and engaging in positive relationships with other children.  In language development- understands and responds to complex language.  The children will be encouraged to express their thoughts and needs and expand their vocabulary.

 

Family Engagement Activity:  Weather depending, builds a snowman, or makes a snow angel and takes a picture to show us your favorite outside snow activity.

 

Classroom Special Events: Ice Cream Sundae Party – date to be determined.

3s:

 

Teachers: Ms. Channah and Ms. Erin.

 

This month we will be working on emergent writing skills and show knowledge of writing conventions and demonstrating an understanding of writing as a means of communication. We will also work on expressive language and encourage the children to use increasingly complex vocabulary and syntax to express thoughts and needs.

 

Family Engagement Activity:  Build a snowman with whatever materials you and your child want.  Please bring it in no later than 1/24.

 

Classroom Special Events:  Ice Cream Party on 1/24.  Our class won this special treat for having the most families attend our open house.

 

Happy birthday to Cooper on 1/13 and Abigail on 1/17!!!

 

 

 

Young 4s:

 

Teachers: Ms. Dot and Ms. Mandy.

 

This month’s focus is on science.  We will learn about hibernation and animals that live in Polar Regions. The class will explore each animal, their characteristics as well as compare and contrast them. We will also learn about the water cycle, including snow and ice.  The children will learn how to plan for and carry out investigations as well as collect, evaluate and communicate their findings.  This month’s focus: letters Y, Z, O, color: white, shape: oval and the numbers are: 0, 1, 2.

 

Family Engagement Acitivity: Our family engagement will be a “winter poll”. Our class will take home a poll to find out what their families prefer as a winter activity, skating, sledding, skiing, or what winter treats they prefer such as hot cocoa, cookies, milk…

 

Good luck to our friends Amira, Daniel and Ryan that are moving up and we would like to welcome our new friends, Isla, Michael, Olivia L and Olivia S. to our classroom.

 

 

 

Pre-K:

 

Teachers: Ms. Brenda and Ms. Hannah.

 

This month we will be working on number sense and quantity.  Children develop number recognition and counting skills and learn the relationship between numbers and the quantity they represent.  Children explore the characteristics of objects and materials that are living, non living, man-make or naturally occurring

 

Family Engagement Activity:  Feeling the winter blues?  Together as a family you will be playing a game to brush up on counting, taking turns and sharing. Details to follow.

 

Classroom Special Events: Please remember to send in boots, snowsuits (if you have one) on snow days so we can all still go outside.

 

Welcome Amira, Daniel and Ryan to Pre-K.  Happy birthday to Gavin on 1/5, Logan on 1/5 and Quinn on 1/11.

 

 

 

K-Prep/Kindergarten:

 

Teachers: Ms. Tynicka and Ms. Kaitlyn.

 

This month’s focus will be emergent writing. Children learn writing skills and show knowledge of writing conversations; they demonstrate an understanding of writing as a means of communication.  In math we will be working on number relationships and operations.  Children learn to use numbers to compare quantities and solve problems.

 

Family Engagement Activity:  Hibernation Research Question – each child has picked a question about hibernation, please help him/her fill out the sheet and return it once complete.  Kindergarten share and explore- every Friday we will be observing and exploring different items as we integrate learning new and reviewing old, science, math and literacy concepts.  A list of objects will be provided as well as when the item needs to be brought in.

 

Classroom Special Events:  The Mitten Play- on Friday Jan 24 at 3:00.  The Kindergarten and K-Prep class will be performing a rendition of Jan Brett’s The Mitten, as well as a few of their winter themed songs.  If you are able to attend, please RSVP to Ms. Tynicka or Ms. Kaitlyn by Weds. Jan 23.
