Effective ways to teach children to read

It is important to give your child a head start by teaching them to read at home and ensure they develop a good reading culture. At first, it might prove to be a difficult task to convince a child to read but with consistency and motivation, they will find it to be interesting and exciting.

Be a Good Example
Children always like to imitate exactly what their parents are doing. If you become an avid reader, your children will be motivated to also read and this will be developing a good reading culture in children. It is important to show your child that reading is exciting and interesting by starting to enjoy it yourself. You can spend a maximum of twenty minutes reading when children are around and they will be also motivated to read themselves.
Make Books Easily Available for Kids
It is important to make books available for kids at any time so that they can read when they need to. Place books on lower shelves where kids can reach and set up a reading space near the bookshelves, where it will be easy for kids to access the books.
Read To Your Child
Reading to your child is the initial process of teaching your child to read. This will help to instill in the child a love for books and a passion for reading. Reading to your child on a daily basis will expose them to books early enough and make them enjoy reading.
Offer Them Child Story Books
Children love reading and listening to stories and by giving them storybooks you will make them enjoy reading and develop their reading skills. For example, you can get them fiction books that will interest them and make them read all the time.
Ask Interactive Questions
Even before your child is able to fluently read, it is important to teach them reading comprehensions. Read a certain story to your child and ask them questions based on that story. For example, you can ask them about the characters in the story, who was the father of who in the story, and many more.
Give Your Child Books as Gifts
Nothing excites a child more than giving them a gift. Children love gifts so why not give them a book that they will cherish. They will have their gift all the time, making them read the book always.
Use Graphics and Beautiful Sculptures
Children greatly love graphics especially when they are colorful and eye-catchy. Buy sculptures and graphics for kids and place a name beside the image so they will learn to relate the name to the image. For example, a dog, giraffe, cow, cat, ball and other things and the child will learn and understand easily.
Ensure you talk or communicate with your child using regular words and avoid informal words and phrases that will confuse kids. By so doing you will be harboring a great, successful and intellectual little young reader.
