December 2018 – Newsletter – East Greenwich
Welcome to the month of December!!!
This month the children in 3s up to the Kindergarten room will be able to attend Sparky’s Puppets, Stories from Snowy Lands. The show will be on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 9:30. Please make sure your child has returned his/her permission slip.
Santa will be visiting the classrooms on Dec. 18th. The children will be able to take pictures with Santa, sing songs with Santa and he will be reading a story to the Pre-K and Kindergarten class.
This month we will also be working with the Alliance for Children Adoption of RI to help bring holiday joy to some of the children that have not been placed in permanent homes. If you would like to help, we have tags of children’s names and the gift that have asked for this holiday. Please bring the gift wrapped with the child’s tag on it by Dec. 17. We want to make sure the children get the gifts in time. Thank you for helping.
We will be closed on Monday, Dec. 24 and Tuesday Dec. 25 for Christmas and Christmas Eve. We will also be closed on Monday Dec. 31 and Jan 1st for New Years Eve and New Years Day.
Celebrating a birthday this month is Ms. Kyrie in Older 3s on 12/3, Nurse Cara on 12/16 and Hollie our floater on 12/18! Happy Birthday! We would like to wish all of you a wonderful holiday for you and your families.
Infants:
Babies at 6 months are fascinated by touching different textures, feeling running water through fingers, scrunching up a ball of paper. We will be working on stimulating their sense of touch. We will also continue to work on vocabulary. We will be doing this by constantly talking to the babies which is a key part of their language development. We will read stories, count items, do finger plays and repeat them, since repetition is key.
Classroom Special Events: This month we will be having a holiday pajama party on Dec. 21st. More information soon to follow. Celebrating a special 1st birthday this month is Anna on 12/27 and Teddy on 12/29!!!!! Happy birthday!
Crawlers:
This month we will continue to work on vocabulary and phonological awareness. Children notice and discriminate the sounds of spoken languages. We will also continue to introduce the children to different stories and books to provide the children with a variety of literacy experiences.
Family Engagement Activity: The 13 Things Babies Learn When We Read To Them, please see the hand out to available in the room.
Classroom Special Events: Holiday Party on 12/21. Please feel free to look at our sign up sheet in our classroom.
Young Toddlers:
This month we will be working on cognitive development, attention and inhibitory control. We will practice this by sitting on the rug with our friends and listen to a short story. We will also work on literacy and comprehension of words. We will work on this through songs by making movements and sounds in response to cues in songs.
Family Engagement Activity: Bake a special holiday treat with your child. Take pictures and bring them in to show to your class.

Older Toddlers:
This month we will be working in science. Children explore the characteristics of objects and materials that are living, non- living, man made or naturally occurring. We will explore snow, real and faux. In Social studies- children gain awareness of how they relate to their family and community. They begin to recognize similarities and differences in people. We will be doing this by exploring different books from around the world.
Family Engagement Activity: Our winter tree board is in the need of a decorated tree from your family. Your tree can be 2D or 3D as long as if can be attached to the bulletin board. Have fun with this.
Classroom Special Events: We will be having a Happy Hanukkah celebration on Dec. 6th and a Merry Christmas party on Dec. 21st. Happy Birthday to Elliott on 12/22!!
3’s Preschool:
This month we will focus on Creative Arts to help children gain appreciation for the arts and enjoy participating in it. We will be singing new holiday songs, changing our dramatic area into a Santa’s workshop where the children will be able to fix and take care of toys and we will be having gingerbread playdough to create cookies in our North Pole Bakery. Classroom Special Events: Dec. 21 we will be having a Holiday card exchange. Please keep and eye out for more details.
Family Engagement: We will be sending home a Holiday Tradition worksheet for you to fill out with your child. Let us know if you have any special holiday traditions and you can also draw pictures.
4’s Preschool:
This month we will be focusing more on social studies by helping the children gain awareness of how they relate to their family and community and understand and respect similarities and differences in people. We will also encourage the children to develop and awareness of themselves as an individual with unique thoughts, feelings and perspectives.
Classroom Special Events: Dec. 21 we will be having a Winter Holiday Classroom Celebration. It will be a day of fun and games. Happy Birthday to Michaela on 12/2 and Abigale on 12/11!!
Pre-K :
This month we will be learning about Holidays celebrated around the world to demonstrate and awareness of an appreciation for family and cultural differences. We will also learn about “Still Life” art and have an opportunity to draw a still life art project.
Family Engagement Activity: To go with the holidays around the world theme, please make a collage or picture with your child of a special tradition you do during the holidays, for example picking our a Christmas Tree together, going Christmas caroling, opening gifts on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas morning….and so on.
Classroom Special Events: Christmas Concert: date and time will soon be posted. Polar Express Pajama Party: date and time will soon be posted.
Kindergarten and K-Prep:
Social Studies- Family and Community. Children gain awareness of how they relate to their family and community, understand social roles and responsibilities and recognize and respect similarities and differences in people. In Creative Arts- Children gain an appreciation for and participating in the creative arts.
Family Engagement Activity: Holiday Chorus- Please join us on 12/21 while our class sings an assortment of holiday songs including Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, The Hanukkah song and Must Be Santa. The chorus will be held in our room from 3:00 to 3:30.
Classroom Special Events: 12/21 Holiday Chorus, 12/20: Polar Express Day- wear your pajamas and get ready for a day filled with fun ending with popcorn and a movie!. 12/19- Happy Holiday Feast. Please see the sign up list if you are able to contribute to our holiday feast. Happy Birthday to Dora on 12/22!!
